VDS Arts Academy awards

VDS is one of the Sabhas that genuinely support the cause of arts in Madras. They are supposed to be paying the artists rather than getting them to pay.

Here is a report on their annual award function this year from The Hindu:-

VDS Arts Academy that provides opportunity to young talented artists in the ages five to twenty celebrated its 12th anniversary recently.

K. Srikkanth, former Indian cricket captain, was the chief guest, who gave away awards to the Best gurus and Best accompanying artists for Dance, and also presented prizes, medals and mementos to about hundred young musicians selected by the VDS Arts Academy.

Gurus honoured: Sakunthala Seshadri (vocal), C.A. Rajasekar (violin), Karaikkudi Mrs. V. M. Ganesan (mridangam), J. Suryanarayana Murthy (Bharatanatyam).

Artists who accompany dance programmes were also felicitated.

The award winners were: V. Venugopal (vocal), Sikkil B. Balasubramanian (violin), K.R.Venkatsubramanian (mridangam).

The Top Ten VAA winners, who received prizes were:

R. Kalpalathika — vocal 1st Prize, A. Narayanan — vocal II Prize, Shraddha Mohan — vocal III Prize, Sudha R. S. Iyer — violin I Prize, N. C. Bharadwaj — mridangam I Prize, R. Uma — dance I prize, J. Aishwarya — dance II Prize.

The evening began with the vocal recital of R. Kalpalathika with Sudha R. S. on the violin and N. C. Bharadwaj on the mridangam.
